Our culture feasts on social media, team sports, technology, fun…but rarely do we find people feasting on God’s words from the bible. The crazy thing is that most parents want their kids to be successful in life. Parents work hard, sometimes multiple jobs or jobs with long commutes to pay for the best education for their kids.
Young children play soccer, football, hockey, basketball or whatever sport in hopes of developing skills that will later lead to scholarships. If it’s not sports it’s a club that depletes the precious resources of time and energy. Often family life is sacrificed for a hurried pace that leaves little time for family let alone devotions.
To be clear, I’m not suggesting any of these things are bad in and of themselves, but when children leave the house, lose their faith and/or become “holiday kids” it begs the question: What are we pouring into? What are we missing?
Time, money and energy, limited resources, are poured into the hopes of scholarships, skills, friendships- all highly uncertain and unpredictable. What if we devoted just a fraction of that time into pouring eternal truth into the hearts of our children?
When we take the time to deliberately teach our children of God’s love, His character and His plans for a successful life we give our children a blessing that will carry them through any of life’s best and worst circumstances. Ultimately we present them with the gift of eternal life; though the choice to receive salvation is theirs.
God is clear about what parents should be investing into their children.
Honestly, the recovering legalist in me raises a brow to this, perhaps like you’re feeling now. I feel a bit defensive when people “tell me how to parent”. I’m not telling you, way back when, God was clear:
“And you must commit yourselves wholeheartedly to these commands that I am giving you today. Repeat them again and again to your children. Talk about them when you are at home and when you are on the road, when you are going to bed and when you are getting up.” Deuteronomy 6:6-7
God says it’s so important to remind our children of His ways that He repeats this command to teach our children at all times again:
“Teach them to your children, talking about them when you sit at home and when you walk along the road, when you lie down and when you get up.” Deuteronomy 11:19
What I do I love about this command? God doesn’t say investing in extracurricular activities is wrong, but provides a playbook parents are commanded to follow.
When you walk along the road. (Drive these days and who knows what in the future.)
We can do this!
God calls us to live life and puts us in different circumstances for His purposes. As you take your kids here, there and everywhere there’s a fun way to stick to follow the command to teach our children: Seeds Family Worship.
The musicians and artists over at Seeds Family Worship create songs that from scripture verses. The heart of this group is incredible! They provide bible memorization tools for free on their website, guitar chords and so much more! Until recently when you ordered an album they would send you TWO: One to keep and one to give away. That’s how much they want to spread the hopeful message of God’s true words and provide a way for families to connect their busy lives with God.
A couple of weeks ago I placed an order for their new Christmas album and asked if they would consider sending an extra copy for me to give away at Peacequility. Not only did they send an extra CD, they sent a DVD to give away with it! The generous heart of their ministry amazes me!
Seeds isn’t just awesome for families or kids, it’s equally fantastic for adults! I discovered Seeds during a stressful time financially and physically. As I went in for ultrasounds and an MRI to figure out why my health was going sideways this song (and other verses put to song) strengthened and encouraged my heart. We shouldn’t be surprised because Hebrews 4:12 is clear:
“For the word of God is alive and powerful. It is sharper than the sharpest two-edged sword, cutting between soul and spirit, between joint and marrow. It exposes our innermost thoughts and desires.”
Whatever your circumstances, pouring truth into your mind will change your perspective and feed your soul.
